How to set up Medical ID and emergency contacts on a parent's phone
Step-by-step setup so first responders can see allergies, medications and emergency contacts from a locked iPhone or Android phone.
If your parent has an emergency, first responders can see key health information and emergency contacts without unlocking the phone, but only if it's set up first.
iPhone: Medical ID
Apple's guide: Set up and view your Medical ID.
- Open the Health app.
- Tap the profile picture, then Medical ID.
- Tap Get Started or Edit.
- Fill in medical conditions, medications, allergies and blood type if known.
- Add Emergency Contacts (you and one backup).
- Turn on Show When Locked.
- Save. Then lock the phone and check it appears from the emergency screen.
Android: emergency information
Google's guide: Get help during an emergency with your Android phone. Steps vary by brand.
- Open Settings and search for Safety & emergency (or "Emergency information").
- Add medical information and emergency contacts.
- Check the info shows from the lock screen's emergency option.
Keep it current
- Update it whenever medications change. A yearly check on a birthday is easy to remember.
- Ask your parent before adding health details. It's their information.
- Also keep a paper list on the fridge for paramedics.
