How to explain ChatGPT to your mom in 5 minutes (and safe first prompts)
A simple script for introducing ChatGPT to a parent or grandparent, with first questions to try together and 4 safety rules.
The 30-second explanation
Try this: "ChatGPT is a computer program you can type or talk to like a person. It's good at explaining things, writing notes and answering questions. But it can be wrong, so we double-check anything important."
Set it up together
- Install the official ChatGPT app from OpenAI (check the developer name in the app store, since copycat apps exist).
- Make the text bigger in your phone's settings.
- Show the microphone button so they can talk instead of type.
- Turn off training on their chats if they prefer (see our privacy checklist).
Good first prompts to try together
- "Explain what a QR code is in simple words."
- "Write a short birthday message for my granddaughter who loves horses."
- "Give me an easy chicken recipe for one person."
- "I got this text message. Does it look like a scam?" (then paste it in, without personal details)
- "What questions should I ask my doctor about a new prescription?" (a starting list only, not medical advice)
4 safety rules
- It can be wrong. It sometimes states made-up facts confidently. Check health, money and legal answers with a real professional.
- Never type passwords, bank numbers, Social Security numbers or Medicare numbers.
- It will never call you or ask for money. Anyone claiming to be "ChatGPT support" on the phone asking for payment is a scammer.
- When unsure, ask family.
What it's not
It's not a doctor, lawyer or financial advisor, and it doesn't replace talking to people who know your parent.
